Roger Federer 'may play beyond 40', says tennis legend Rod Laver Federer keeps Team Europe ahead in Laver Cup with win over Kyrgios

Roger Federer teamed up with Alexander Zverev in doubles to lift Europe into a commanding 3-1 lead over the world team on the first day of the Laver Cup on Friday. Rafael was set to face Team World's Nick Kyrgios in the singles and was going to partner Roger Federer in a doubles game against John Isner and Jack Sock.

While Europe defeated Team World 13-11, after the German overcame Canadian Milos Raonic 6-4 3-6 10-4 in a deciding rubber, there will inevitably be fears for the recent US Open champion.

Bjorn Borg is the captain of Team Europe.

"I've never played in something like that, it was unbelievable", said Zverev who also won it past year for Europe. "World, you guys are awesome". Yesterday I did an infiltration to play, honestly.

Fritz had earlier put Team World to within touching distance of a shock success with a 7-5, 6-7 (3/7), 10-5 win over Thiem.

Despite, perhaps having the best pair of coaches, Fognini dropped the match, going down 6-1, 7-6 (3) against Sock, which was the first win for the U.S. tennis player since November 2018. "I will be supporting #teameurope from the bench!"

Nadal was also set to take on Nick Kyrgios in singles later in the day, having been beaten by the Australian in a doubles contest late on Saturday.

Zverev won the first set but was hit by nerves and Raonic took advantage to win the second set and force a ten-point match tiebreak.

"This has to be one of the biggest wins of my career", Fritz said.

"I don't know what to tell you other than we wanted him to come out 100 per cent and he didn't feel like he could. And on my end of the year, I really believe and hope that this problem will not change my personal calendar or my personal goals". This year is the first time the tournament has been played since being added to the ATP Tour.

"John McEnroe, a New Yorker and Team World captain, said in the statement, "(Boston) is a phenomenal sports town and I expect fans will raise the roof for the home side".
