Turkish forces began an offensive in Syria's northeast on Wednesday to clear out Kurdish militias and return Syrian refugees, within days of United States President Donald Trump's controversial decision to withdraw USA troops from Syria's turbulent north.

France said on Friday (Oct 11) that EU sanctions against Turkey over its offensive against Kurdish forces in Syria are "on the table", after European nations failed to convince the UN Security Council to condemn the operation. It drew swift criticism from Republicans and Democrats in Congress, along with many national defense experts who say it's endangered not only the Syrian Kurds and regional stability but USA credibility as well. He also raised the possibility of imposing sanctions on Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, a move demanded by Republican congressional critics of his policy.

"We can't wait. As Turkey, we will never stop this fight, no matter what anyone says", Erdogan declared on Friday.

"Turkey should be careful not to stumble into America's trap; as soon as America withdraws its forces from northern Syria, Turkey replaces its forces in their place; be careful not to build a new quagmire for yourself", he warned.

Turkish officials said the Kurdish militia has fired dozens of mortars into Turkish border towns the past two days, including Akcakale, killing at least six civilians, including a 9-month-old boy and three girls under 15. Kurdish authorities said the bomb killed three civilians and wounded nine.

Esper said he had spoken with his Turkish counterpart about the harm the Turkish incursion was having on relations between the United States and Turkey, which are North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies. They have been holding thousands of captured ISIS fighters in prisons and tens of thousands of their relatives in detention.

A senior Turkish official in Washington suggested that the USA mediation offer would not be welcomed in Ankara due to Turkey's opposition to negotiating with terrorists.

In a statement released by the Turkish government Friday afternoon, officials said there had been no intentional targeting of a USA observation point, but that Turkish troops had fired in self-defense on "terrorist" positions in the hills about 1,000 meters south of the American position.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation secretary general Jens Stoltenberg expressed "serious concerns" on Friday about Turkey's ongoing operation against Kurdish forces in Syria and called for "restraint".

Turkey on Wednesday began an air and ground offensive against the US-backed Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia.

Ankara says the objective of its assault it to defeat the Kurdish YPG militia - the main component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) - which it designates as a terrorist group over its links to insurgents in Turkey.

A Syrian rebel forces spokesman said the towns were now surrounded after the fighters had seized the villages around them.

"We have to be aware of this and mobilize the resources of our intelligence to undercut this emerging tangible threat", Putin said. Cavusoglu said Ankara expected "strong solidarity" from the alliance.

Turkey wants to create a "safe zone" running for 480 km along the Syrian side of the border but says it will not be better than planned 32 km (20 - mile) limit.

Russia's Nebenzia called the Turkish operation "the result of demographic engineering some of the coalition partners did in the northeast of Syria".

European diplomats in Brussels have responded cautiously to the idea of sanctions, even though Turkey's actions have been met with near-unanimous criticism.

European Union governments threatened sanctions against Turkey on Friday over its offensive in Syria, angrily rejecting President Tayyip Erdogan's warning that he would "open the gates" and send 3.6 million refugees to Europe if they did not back him.

On Friday morning, Turkish warplanes and artillery struck around Syria's Ras al-Ain, one of several border towns that have been the focus of the offensive.
