If you see this fish, kill it

An invasive Asian snakehead fish that can grow to nearly a metre long and exist on land has surfaced in Georgia for the first time.

According to a release from the Georgia Department of Natural (GDNR) Resources, invasive northern snakehead fish have been confirmed in Georgia waters.

An angler's report allowed them to "confirm the presence" after identifying the fish's mottled brown colouring, a dorsal fin traversing the back and the serpentine noggin from which the fish takes its name. The state's Department of Natural Resources said that these invasive creatures have been reported in 14 US states so far.

Wildlife officials are concerned about the snakeheads impacting native species by competing for food and habitat, describing them as "bad news". It is the first sighting of the fish species in Georgia. The snakehead's capture in Georgia is a first for the Peach State.

The fish likely made their way into the wild from unauthorized releases by fish markets or aquarium owners. Matt Thomas, the chief of fisheries, said they are taking steps to determine if the fish had already spread from the pond and keep it from going to other water bodies.

Speaking to CBS 46, he said: "Our first line of defence in the fight against aquatic invasive species, such as the northern snakehead, are our anglers".

The northern snakehead is a long, thin fish, similar in appearance to the native bowfin.

Anglers should also note where it was caught - water body, Global Positioning System co-ordinates - and "report their find to their regional Georgia DNR Wildlife Resources Division Fisheries Office". Instead, "kill it immediately and freeze it".

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources have released a "how to" list in case residents stumble upon the invasive fish.

Georgia wildlife officials urge anyone who spots northern snakeheads to "kill it immediately and freeze it".

Dispose of all bait in trash cans, at disposal stations, or above the waterline on dry land.

Imagine a fish with sharp teeth that's found a way to survive out of water.
